I Want To Be Free!
Senator Barak Obama wins the 2008 presidential election to the cheers of many and the jeers of some. “It’s the economy, stupid”, was the unspoken refrain of a vast number of voters and that sentiment gave Sen. Obama a victory in this election.
Ok, the economy is a wreck. The people we look to as a barometer for our economy is Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is reported in every newspaper, radio, and television financial news division as the key indicator of our economy. What has Wall Street had to say since the election? The Dow plunged 929 points in the first two days after the election. What does that tell us about the election results and our economy? It can’t be good. Why wouldn’t investors greet the election of Barak Obama with bullish confidence? Maybe they understand that the economic plans he has in store for us are not going to lead to prosperity but instead more taxes and less investment capital for success.
I don’t care so much, what people say; talk is cheap. I believe you need to “put your money where your mouth is.” I suppose Wall Street did just that. It is said, “People vote with their pocketbooks.” Well, those who have something left in their pocketbook, (or want to keep something in their pocketbook) have voted with them and are selling because of financial fear for the future.
Time will tell if President Elect Obama can deliver the prosperity he spoke about on the campaign trail. Prosperity is a very subjective term. What is prosperity to some may not be to others. If you are a person who does not pay income taxes because of your low income and you get a check in the mail from the government, you might see that as prosperity. If you are the one who is paying for those checks because of the high taxes you pay, you will probably not see that as prosperity but confiscation. I would much rather be prosperous because of economic growth in the private sector, based on new jobs, new opportunities, and individual hard work rather than a hand out from the government.
Being dependent does not make a person free. Freedom is the American dream. Freedom is not being a slave to others, but rather, launching out to be the best you can be without any roadblocks to your success. I don’t know what others may say but as for me, I want to be free!
